Scout and About: Photo Shoot

Friday, February 26th, 2010

We work two to three months in advance in the magazine world. So although it’s a gloomy February day, we’re busy thinking spring for our May/June issue. Art Director Shawn Williams has been busy all week photographing homes and studio vignettes for the upcoming issue. Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at a location shoot at Peter David Studio.

Angela’s Picks: Light and White

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

Hi everyone! Angela here with a trend that’s a personal favorite. I love sleek metal and dark wood just as much as the next person, but right now it’s all about light wood paired with white. The look is warm, fresh and clean. Plus, this combo is versatile. Teamed up with glass and metal, it’s a pared-down look for a modern space. Adorned with linens and cozy materials, it’s rustic chic. Punched up with a bold accent color, it’s vibrant and fun. Check out these pieces to get this look going in your own home:

Top-drawer coffee table, $399 at West Elm; Moooi Tree Lamp, available at Inform Interiors

Doble Table, $3,694 at Hive Modern

Open House: Model Remodel

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

When we saw this North Beach remodel by Adams Mohler Ghillino Architects, we were completely smitten. The interiors are sophisticated and fun, with the perfect mix of modern glam and laid-back elegance. We featured it on the cover of our January/February 2010 issue (read the story here) and just can’t get enough.

Table Talk: A Taste of Seattle

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

Tasting menus are sweeping Seattle’s restaurant scene—and there’s something for everyone! A meal consisting of six to eight courses, a tasting menu is a wonderful way to sample multiple dishes from a particular chef. If you want to impress that special someone or are planning a night out, check out these restaurants:

Photos via Rover’s

Known as the "chef in the hat," Chef Thierry of Rover’s is old hat (pun intended) at crafting elegant French cuisine from fresh Northwest ingredients. Join him and the wine director for Burgundy’s Louis Jadot for an evening of culinary adventure on Tuesday, March 2. The seven-course meal features dishes such as Columbia River sturgeon with mhamsa, red beets and perigord truffle, and each course will be paired with a select wine from the Louis Jadot portfolio.

Following their 2009 success, the collaborators behind Seattle Chef’s Table are coming together once again to dazzle your tastebuds. Chefs Jason Wilson of Crush, Maria Hines of Tilth, Thierry Rautureau of Rover’s, Joseba Jimenez de Jimenez of The Harvest Vine, John Sundstrom of Lark and Holly Smith of Cafe Juanita, congregate at Rover’s, March 22 and 23, to present their six-course meal.

For a tasting menu any night of the week, try Seattle’s beloved Canlis. Chef Jason Freney has introduced a perennial menu—including a vegetarian option—based on seasonal produce. The former executive chef at New York’s Eleven Madison Park, Freney brings his inventive and focused hand to dishes such as seared scallops with grapefruit, tarragon and Pernod (a liquor flavored with anise).

Guest Blogger: From the Right Bank

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

We are so excited to introduce our guest blogger, Ally of From the Right Bank. We absolutely love her great eye for design. Welcome, Ally!

Hello, Seattleites, I’m Ally of From the Right Bank, and I’m thrilled to be making my first guest appearance here at SH&L‘s Design Dish blog! We all long to make our homes warm and cozy in the winter, and I think it’s especially true this year with the harsh winter those of us in the East have had! My favorite way of doing this is with flannel bedding and wool blankets in shades of gray. Not only will it keep you toasty, it will look great in any room because it works with all styles and colors.

News Flash: Nube Green Opening

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

Last week, we attended the opening of Capitol Hill’s new green boutique, Nube Green (912 E. Pine St. 206-402-4515). The shop only carries products that have been recycled or repurposed, made from sustainable materials and without toxic chemicals,  and assembled, sourced and grown in the U.S. Sound like a tall order? Despite that stringent criteria, owner Ruth True has still been able to fill the shop with beautiful, interesting and useful merchandise. Things like bamboo towels, clothing and messenger bags (made locally by Alchemy Goods) ensure that you can incorporate green into your everyday routine. On the design front,  local firms like Graypants lighting and Meyer Wells furniture make an attractive impact on the shop floor.

Eat lunch at Oddfellows (they share a hallway), and go check it out! Or, follow them on their blog, twitter and Facebook, or shop online. We’re already fans!

News Flash: New at IKEA

Monday, February 15th, 2010

We admire IKEA, the modern-design mecca for the masses, for its ability to bring good design to everyone. So we’re very excited to share IKEA’s February introductions, which include outdoor furniture, fun bedding and textile lines and dining collections that can all be mixed and matched with higher end pieces or customized for a personal look.

Ammerö features clean lines and is great for a poolside setting; the Blankö outdoor line is colorful and perfect for small spaces.

The Lackö collection has timeless outdoor pieces; the Charlotta collection is taste of Japan with manga-inspired patterns.

We love the Henny bedding collection for its relaxed and laid-back style; Renate is the new take on floral with bright spring colors and graphic patterns.

Sjövik has clean lines and a modern simplicity that we love; Svalbo shows us that blond wood is still on the rise.
